Heritage and technology: novel approaches to 3D documentation and communication of architectural heritage
2015
In the past few years we have seen a drastic increasing of image-based modeling (IBM) techniques to get high quality reality-based 3D models. The low costs of these techniques as well as their attractive visual quality have lead many researchers and professionals to invest their energies and resources in several tests. The use of IMB in the field of cultural heritage is mostly exploited in applications such as documentation, digital restoration, visualization, inspection, planning, AR/VR, conservation and design. One of the strengthen of multi-view stereo techniques is the possibility to capture millions of points in a very short time and to get a 3D textured polygonal model that can be eas…
The project for the “Galleria Oretea” by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda and other unbuilt “passages” in Palermo
2022
The contribution aims to conjecturally reconstruct and analyze the unrealized project by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda regarding the “Galleria Oretea” for Palermo. It is an urban project of considerable size and impact, which should have provided the city of Palermo, in the old town, with a gallery in the style of the Parisian “passages”, inspired by the contemporary creations of Milan and Naples. Thanks to the recent cataloging and publication of the entire corpus of drawings in the Damiani Archive, a reinterpretation of the project was carried out through a three-dimensional recomposition of the immersed in the places where it was originally conceived. Two other projects were developed for the…
VIRTUAL REALITY FOR HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE
2019
Abstract. This article shows a first step in the development of an immersive virtual tour of the Cathedral of Palermo, entering the fields of Digital Cultural Heritage and Edutainment. Its purpose is to help people to gain knowledge about the site, highlighting the complex stratifications that have characterized its history. The development of the project has been possible thanks to different phases of work: surveys were initially carried out by laser scanning, then assembled and processed to obtain the 3D model of the current state; at the same time, the model of reconstruction was processed in several phases, based on historical, archival and iconographic sources; both models were, later, …
A "laboratory" open air in the urban landscape of Palermo
2012
The study intends to make new contributions to knowledge of a interesting "laboratory" in the open air in the urban landscape of Palermo, a cultural and scientific heritage in which architecture, art and decoration coexist in an experiment of collective synergies. The Botanical Garden C enter, with its ten acres of land appears, still, a fervent creative process between artifice and nature, the expression of a specific historical and cultural climate in which expectations converged of a intellectual, scientific and institutional fervor. The academic institution, founded in 1789 with the intention of cultivating useful plants to the arts, crafts and medicine, contributed to the spread of tro…
Will drawing be used to study and teach architecture in the next century?
2022
In this millennium, the use of digital tools for representation (and survey, but the subject will not be discussed here) has rapidly and deeply modified the study and the design of architecture. The rapid evolution of this mutation prompts the following question: will drawing be the language of the architect in the next century?
Il Portico meridionale della Cattedrale di Palermo: sperimentazioni di rilievo attraverso l’utilizzo di tecniche Structure from Motion
2014
Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques constitute a very fertile field of investigation within the research of the surveying sector and that of the representation of architecture. They allow us to reach higher levels of reliability and accuracy, both metric and graphical, extremely quickly and with lower costs than other methods, including the laser scanner. In this study, we report the results of some experiments carried out on the southern Portico entrance of the Cathedral of Palermo through the use of the SfM techniques later validated by comparison with the point cloud obtained from laser scanning.
Conjectural reconstruction from archive drawings: methodological aspects
2018
The digital reconstruction of architectural projects starting from archive sources is a well established disciplinary application useful for the study and analysis of architecture and its relations with the historical context as well as for the representation of volumes and spaces not visible in the original documents. Given the importance recognized to these operations which inevitably involve processes of hermeneusi we propose methodological guidelines for the drafting a protocol limiting arbitrariness as much as possible. The analysis was carried out on three projects by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda (Capua 1834 - Palermo 1911), Ernesto Basile (Palermo 1857-1932) and Salvatore Benfratello (Pa…
3D digital tools for the archaeological massive artifacts documentation
2022
This study focuses on 3D acquisition and documentation procedures, innovating and implementing traditional survey methods to promote and increase the efficacy of the historical and archaeological heritage fruition. Especially within museum itineraries, modern digital technologies, if consistently applied, can promote a better interpretative reading, implementing the knowledge of scholars. Moreover, in coherence with the Horizon Europe “Cultural Heritage” area of intervention, for a new future inextricably linked to the history of Cultural Heritage, it is essential to experiment approaches that favor innovative mechanisms of fruition and promotion of works of art, based on the idea that the …
Low cost system for visualization and exhibition of pottery finds in archeological museums
2015
The objective of this project is to build a low-cost system for surveying, modeling, prototyping and interactive visualizing aimed at the enhancement of islamic pottery finds of X – XI centuries. The system will allow various applications: the creation of systems for displaying artifacts from the museum alongside the exhibition, the virtual view of restorations from fragments, including AR and VR, the physical reconstruction of the original form using 3D printer to show the pieces in their entirety, as well as the construction of interactive virtual archives to be made available to scholars and visitors.
INTEGRATED SURVEYING AND MODELING TECHNIQUES FOR THE DOCUMENTATION AND VISUALIZATION OF THREE ANCIENT HOUSES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA
2015
The paper is focused on the layout and testing of a workflow for the documentation of archeological remains, addressed to the study, visualization and information data input. Topographic, laser scanning and photogrammetric data have been used to build up 3D textured models of three ancient houses built in Sicily and in Tunisia in the Hellenistic and Roman age. 3D models have been used to extract conventional representations (plans and sections), analyze the geometric and proportional features and propose a virtual reconstruction of the original layout. The final step of the research work has been addressed to the creation of a web-based tools for the visualization of the models addressed to…
